The Prairie Island Indian Community is searching for a Social Worker / Elder’s Advocate (SWEA) who can assists community elders by educating and connecting them to resources and services that are available. The SWEA also helps elders apply for those benefits and services and to navigate through these resources. Responsibilities include, but not limited to; provide general assistance and advocacy related to supportive and social services to Prairie Island Indian Community Elders; provide up-to-date information and clarification regarding programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and other supportive programs. The SWEA will also educate residents on services and resources available to them; develop and maintain linkages with resources and support services to remain current regarding information and services available to address the Elder’s needs; refer and link Elders to supportive services. Such services may include, but are not limited to, case management, personal assistance, transportation, therapeutic listening and counseling, preventive health and wellness advocacy; act as liaison with local care providers, doctors and hospitals, and PIIC service departments to ensure the Elder is properly cared for; work cooperatively and communicate regularly with the Elder’s family members and promote a positive social climate that fosters the Elder’s psychosocial well-being by developing, implementing, and monitoring educational, recreational, and therapeutic programs for the Elder’s participation. Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Gerontology, Counseling, or related field and minimum two years of work experience in related field. Additional experience in health and human services program delivery, experience interviewing and gathering data and information, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work as part of a team and demonstrated commitment to creating opportunities for the well-being for members of the Dakota communities that align with and sustain Dakota language and culture. Candidates must pass drug and background screening, have a valid Driver’s License, sensitivity to Native American Culture. Indian preference applies in accordance with Sec. 7(b) P.L. 93-638.
