Position Summary  Under general supervision, the Cook’s Helper will be responsible for maintaining an efficient and clean kitchen.  This includes washing dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, pans, floors, tables and sanitizing all areas of the kitchen. The Cook’s Helper will also perform routine tasks of setting up workstations and ingredients, so that food can be prepared.   

 

Job Functions Essential Functions 

  • Washes, stores and stocks all plateware, glassware, eating utensils, cups, bowls, pots, pans and other smallwares and equipment to ensure sufficient quantities are on hand to meet the needs of the kitchen and its customers.
  • Removes trash from kitchen and dining area regularly throughout the shift; cleans and sanitizes trash cans and keeps clean liners in cans at all times.
  • Loads, runs and unloads dishwasher in a safe, timely and efficient manner
  • Maintains a safe, orderly and clean kitchen.  
  • Cleans and sanitizes production equipment, work surfaces, floors and kitchen; complies with kitchen sanitation and safety procedures.  Labels and stocks all ingredients on shelves, so they can be organized and easily accessible.  Measures ingredients and seasonings to be used in cooking.
  • Prepares cooking ingredients by washing and chopping fruit and vegetables, cutting meat, etc.
  • Maintains required food quality standards.
  • Assists in storing unused food supplies in accordance with safe food handling requirements, and utilizing knowledge of temperature requirements and food spoilage guidelines.
  • Observes and promotes safe work habits and procedures.
  • Transfers supplies and equipment between warehouse, work and serving areas and cleaning/dishwashing areas in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintains coffee and service areas in conference rooms.
  • Delivers, and returns food service to conference rooms for Tribal Committees. 
  • Cleans grease trap daily.
  • Serves food to students, Tribal Members, UAIC Employees and guests with a positive attitude.

     

    Non-essential Functions 

  • Assists with inventory
  • Assists with Tribal events on weeknights and weekends, as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge 

  • Knowledge of health codes and sanitation principles
  • Knowledge of dishwashing machines and safe operation thereof 
  • Knowledge of various types of foods and preparation styles
  • Basic arithmetic calculations  Knowledge of cold storage procedures
  • Knowledge of FIFO food rotation procedures
  • Basic computer literacy, specifically with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Valid food handler’s card or skills to obtain one
  • Knife skills

  • Ability to follow recipes in food preparation
  • Ability to operate and care for institutional kitchen equipment

  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions

  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as independently with little direction
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to clear all necessary background checks

     

    Qualifications Minimum requirements

  • Education:  
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • ServSafe Certificate or ability to obtain within one month of employment
  • Experience:
    • 2 years working as a cook’s helper / dishwasher in a fast-paced kitchen environment

       

      Preferred qualifications:

  • 1 year of advanced food prep experience at garde manger or similar environment

 

 Working Conditions While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to taste or smell; stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.  The specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus, all with or without correction. The employee may have frequent exposure to heat or cold beyond normal office temperatures.
